EMAIL PREFERENCES

We measure one thing when you open our emails.

Here is exactly what it records, and how to switch it off — without leaving our mailing list.

What it is

Our emails carry a tracking pixel: a transparent image, one pixel square, placed in the HTML of the message. When your email software loads the images in a message, it requests that file from our sending platform. That request is recorded as an open.

It is invisible by design, which is why we are telling you about it here rather than leaving you to find it.

What we look at

Four things, all of them about the email itself.

Opens: Whether you opened the message, and when.

Clicks: Which links in the message you followed.

Device: The email software and operating system you read on, so we can check our layouts display properly.

Geography: The country or region you read from, derived from your internet connection

That is the whole list. We see nothing stored on your device, nothing you do outside our emails, and nothing in your own correspondence. This data is not sold, shared, or used for advertising.

Why we measure it

  • To see which technical subjects our readers actually open — wavefront sensing, adaptive optics, metrology, quantum links.
  • To set how often we write, and keep the volume down.
  • To identify addresses that no longer read us, and stop sending to them.
  • To check that our messages are arriving at all.

What to stop

What happens next

Your address is added to a list that is excluded from open measurement on every subsequent send. This is a manual step on our side, which is why it takes a few days rather than being instant.

Open data already collected on your address before your request is deleted at the same time.

If you would rather stop receiving our emails altogether, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any message. That is separate from this page and takes effect immediately.
